Teaching

Though I am taking a hiatus from teaching for a few years, I taught writing classes at the UCLA-Extension Writer’s ProgramAntioch University Los Angeles, and Writing Workshops Los Angeles, and Inspiration2Publication through Antioch University’s MFA Program.

I still often speak at universities or other institutions on topics that include creative writing, developmental editing, bisexual activism, professional writing, and narrative and storytelling in activism.

My classes have included:

Developmental Editing
Fiction (Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced)
Creative Nonfiction (Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced)
Writing for Social Change (Professional Writing for Nonprofits)
Memoir Writing
Academic Writing
Creative Writing on the Internet
To Show and To Tell: The Art of Scene and Summary

Here’s an interview with me about teaching at Writing Workshops Los Angeles.

A kick-ass quote that sums up a lot of what I think about teaching and writing:

“Art itself is our language for expressing the understandings of the heart, the body, and the spirit. Any reduction of that language into intellectual messages is radically, destructively incomplete.” — Ursula K. Le Guin
